First Holy Communion

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven.” (John 6:51)

First Holy Communion is a joyful milestone in our parish family. In this sacrament, we receive Jesus—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—in the Eucharist for the first time. It’s a moment of grace for the child, the family, and the whole community as we gather to worship and give thanks.

Who Is First Communion For?

Typically, children prepare for First Holy Communion once they are ready to understand, in a simple and age-appropriate way, that the Eucharist is truly Jesus. In our parish this is usually around Year 3/age 7–8, but older children and teens are very welcome too. Adults preparing to receive Holy Communion for the first time normally do so through our RCIA process.

Baptism is required before receiving First Communion. If your child is not yet baptised, we would be delighted to help—just mention this in the form below.

How Preparation Works

Our programme brings together parish, family, and school (where applicable) to help children grow in faith and love for Jesus.

  • Parent meeting: An initial evening to outline dates, expectations, and how we’ll support you at home.

  • Child sessions: Friendly, small-group catechesis led by trained volunteers, covering Scripture, the sacrament of confession, the Mass, and how to pray.

  • First Reconciliation (Confession): Children celebrate this sacrament before First Communion. We prepare them gently and age-appropriately.

  • Mass attendance: Families are required to attend Sunday Mass regularly. Children learn best by worshipping with the community.

  • Practice/rehearsal: A short practice near the big day so everyone feels calm and confident.

We’ll provide a simple workbook and suggestions for prayer at home. Parents are the primary teachers of the faith—your example makes all the difference!

What children learn

  • God’s love and our friendship with Jesus

  • The story of salvation and the life of the Church

  • God’s mercy in Reconciliation and how to make a good confession
  • What the Mass is and why Sunday matters

  • The Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist

  • How to receive Holy Communion reverently

  • Practical ways to pray (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be) and to live charity

On the Day

  • Arrival & seating: Families gather early so children can sit with their group.

  • Dress:

    • Girls: modest white/ivory dress (veils/headpieces optional).

    • Boys: smart trousers with shirt and tie, or a suit—no special colour required.

    • Comfortable shoes; keep accessories simple.

  • Photography: We’ll explain our photo policy in advance to keep the liturgy prayerful.

  • Receiving Holy Communion: Children receive under the guidance of catechists and clergy. Those not receiving are welcome to come forward for a blessing.

Special circumstances

  • Additional learning or sensory needs: We’ll tailor preparation so your child can participate comfortably.

  • Separated families or safeguarding considerations: We’ll work with you sensitively and confidentially.

For older children & adults

Missed First Communion at the usual age? No problem. We arrange age-appropriate preparation for older children and teens, and adults are invited to the RCIA journey toward receiving the Sacraments of Initiation. Use the form below and we’ll guide you.

What we’ll ask for

  • Baptism certificate (if baptised elsewhere)

  • A completed enrolment form and consent for safeguarding/photography

  • Any information that helps us support your child’s learning needs

There is no fee for sacraments. If materials incur costs, we will keep them modest; assistance is available if needed.

How parents can help

  • Pray together daily (even one Our Father at bedtime is powerful).

  • Make Sunday Mass a family priority.

  • Chat about what you hear at Mass—ask your child what stood out.

  • Practice the simple responses and receiving posture at home.

  • Encourage kindness and small acts of service.

Key dates (to be confirmed each year)

  • Parent information evening

  • Children’s preparation sessions (weekly)

  • First Reconciliation service

  • Rehearsal in church

  • First Holy Communion Mass

Check the parish newsletter and website calendar for this year’s schedule.

Safeguarding & care

All catechists are DBS-checked and follow parish guidelines. We aim to create a warm, respectful environment where every child is known by name and supported.
