The Sacrament of Reconcilliation (Confession)

“Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” In Confession (also called Reconciliation), we bring the Lord our weary hearts, our regrets, and the places we’ve fallen short, and we receive His mercy and peace in return.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

Confession is not a courtroom; it’s a clinic. You come as you are, a little bruised by life and your own choices, and the Lord meets you with His mercy. Through the priest, Jesus lifts the weight, restores peace, and helps you begin again with a steadier heart.

If the very thought makes you nervous, you’re in good company. Most people feel that way — even after many years of going. Don’t worry.

Learn what confession is, how to do it, and where you can receive this sacrament below.

Going to Confession: What to Do and What to Say

1

Arrive and settle your heart

Find a quiet place to sit, breathe slowly, and ask the Holy Spirit for honesty and peace.
You might whisper: “Lord, help me to be truthful and not afraid.”

2

When it’s your turn, go in

Some people like the screen, some prefer face-to-face. Either is perfectly fine

3

Begin with the Sign of the Cross.

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

4

Start with a simple opening.

“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been a week / a month / a long time since my last confession.”

5

Confess your sins simply and honestly.

“I’ve missed Mass without a good reason.”

“I’ve been impatient and sharp-tongued at home.”
“I’ve held on to resentment and refused to forgive.”
“I’ve been drinking more than I should.”

6

Listen for a word of counsel and receive a penance.

The priest may offer a short encouragement, a practical suggestion, and then a penance.
You can respond simply: “Thank you, Father.”

7

Make your Act of Contrition. (Or read it)

"O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because they offend Thy infinite goodness, and because I love Thee above all things. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen."

8

Receive Absolution

The priest will pray the words of absolution. At the end you respond: “Amen.”
Many people make the Sign of the Cross again.

9

Go in peace, and do your penance soon afterwards.

“Thank you, Father.”
Then, if you can, do the penance in the church straight away and spend a moment thanking God:
“Lord, thank you for your mercy. Help me to begin again.”
